November 2019 Guest List: Elsa Peretti

November 2019 Guest List: Elsa Peretti

By Tarleton Walmsley

Guest List: A person living or dead, real or imagined, that we'd have over for dinner.

Last night I watched an amazing documentary about American fashion designer Halston. Although I would DEFINITELY have Halston over for dinner, I was immediately and at once taken with his close friend Elsa Peretti. If you follow our Instagram stories, you already have an idea of how taken I was with the film--truly love a good fashion documentary.

Elsa moved stateside in the 70s and quickly established herself as a model for Halston. But it was when she started making jewelry that her career really took off. You'll likely recognize Elsa's work--she's still one of the leading designers at Tiffany & Co., where her work has been shown since signing on with the company in 1974. Iconic pieces like her bone cuff and bean shaped necklaces were are at once modern and timeless.

If Elsa came to dinner, we would talk about how it feels to be one of the leading designers at Tiffany's. According to the Halston documentary, he encouraged Elsa to keep her name and work as her own when signing the contract with the company so that she wouldn't lose the rights to her name like he did. So of course we'd talk about how badass she was in negotiating that for herself. What else? We'd talk Halston of course, nightclub culture in 1970s NYC, and what the inspiration was for making those bean shaped boxes you see above. They're all I've ever wanted in a lacquer box. Finally, I'm dying to know about her choice in eyewear--in love with the over-the-top size and scale of them and need for Warby Parker or someone to remake them for me.
