June 2019 Guest List: Phoebe Robinson

By Tarleton Walmsley

Guest List: A person living or dead, real or imagined, that we'd invite over for a dinner party.
I'm not very good at reading non-fiction. If it isn't about 1970s era musicians and bands, I usually direct my attention to the novel format. I tend to use reading for stress relief, and diving into a non-fiction title that requires me to THINK about STUFF is often a challenge for someone who is almost ALWAYS thinking about stuff.

And yet, lately I've been feeling more inclined to engage my thoughts in a different way. So when I saw Phoebe Robinson's book You Can't Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain on the shelf at Firestorm, I was intrigued. Phoebe is one half of the 2 Dope Queens podcast series, and after glancing through the pages of the book, I was already hooked.

Phoebe is hilarious, and she uses humor to inform the reader about things like race and feminism in a way that is honest and real. I also love how she applies pop culture references throughout, and it seems like we could talk a lot about television shows from the late 80s and early 90s. If Phoebe came over for dinner, I'd ask her about how 2 Dope Queens got its start, why she loves Michael Fassbender so much, what it was like writing for Season 3 of Broad City, and find out the last series she binge watched on Netflix.
